About
It used to bother me that no one told the stories about Alaska that I wanted to hear. The stories about smart people doing interesting and important things. So I started doing it.
I seek out stories about Alaska that no one hears. The state of our rural housing would be a national embarrassment if more people knew, but conversely, the advancements in sustainable housing that happen here would be the envy of the world, if only more people knew (I've covered both). Alaska’s salmon are the final holdout of the world’s wild salmon stocks, but they're crashing and nobody really knows why. I’ve been photographing the people trying to figure it out, and the people who depend on salmon for food, jobs, and a way of life.
I work with universities, agencies, and businesses to document their work all over Alaska. My work has been published in the Nome Nugget and the NY Times, and many publications in between.
I've taken photos of Olympic skiers and professional climbers at the top of their game. I've taken photos of people bundled up on top of Denali and on the beach in their birthday suits. I've taken photos in basement laboratories and at construction sites in the mountains; of fire ecology in the rain, and limnology in the smoke. I take photos underwater, from canoes, and from all sorts of aircraft. I love Alaska.
And because I love Alaska, I bring back the real stories of my home. There's so damn many.
